We’ve all got that hairbrush lurking around that we’ve been using everyday for the past 10 years… and we don’t need to get a new one because it still does its job and works well, right?
Well, here’s some news. If you have a hairbrush that you’ve been using everyday for the past 10 years, you might want to chuck it out and start fresh with a new brush. We’re all well-versed in cleaning our makeup brushes every week (or at least, we know we should), but did you ever think that you should be cleaning your hairbrush regularly?
It may come as a shock, but you should also be cleaning your hairbrush weekly. Think about all the oil, skin cells, styling residue, and general dirt and grime that can build up over time. It’s quite horrifying to think we’ve been brushing all of that into our freshly washed, clean hair.
So, since we’re all busy creatures with long to-do lists, lets look at the most simple and quick way to clean your hairbrush.
1. Remove as much hair as you can from your brush! (You can use any pointed object or your fingers for this step)
2. Fill a bowl or sink with warm water and gentle shampoo. Make sure the water isn't too hot or it might damage your brush. (Pro tip: baby shampoo works well to cleanse whilst being gentle on your brush)
3. For a plastic brush, submerge the entire brush and let it soak for up to 5 minutes. For a wooden brush, or brushes with soft bases don’t submerge the entire brush, only submerge the bristles. Dip the brush in the water and shake it around (this will help to loosen up the debris and oils).
4. If your brush is extra dirty, you can use a clean toothbrush to clean the base and bristles.
5. Rinse the brush under cool water and leave to dry.
What you're left with is a refreshed hair brush that's ready to reuse again and again to style and detangle your clean hair. Even better, you're keeping your hair clean and prolonging the life of your hair brush in the process.
